Antique Moldovan Rug "Feodora's Roses" (Not For Sale)
This craftful antique rug was weaved by Valentina's grandmother Feodora in 1900. At that time, Moldova was part of the Russian Empire. Fedora was a skilled weaver and she was a Russian Old Believer (Starover), a native Russian community residing in the village of Cunicea in Northern Moldova.
It is likely the wool for the rug was colored with natural dyes sourced by local natural dye experts from plants, flowers, trees and minerals.
This is only a fragment of the rug, which is used to be longer. The arrangement of the fragment is bordered by aa leafy stem with rosebuds. The field of the rug is decorated with two medallions: identical rose bouquets. The date of the weaving (1900) is inscripted on the rug together with an Old Cyrillic letter that might stand for the name initial of the weaver or the person the rug would be gifted to.
